How to protect images from hotlink or being copied

In one of my posts I had explained how to save your contents from being duplicated by other websites. Protecting your content is very much important if you are into serious blogging or blogging is the only source of living where your content is everything for you.

Image plays a good amount of role in SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and hence we include an image on every possible blog post. Sometimes we are investing several hours to prepare a damn good image for our topic. It is important to protect your own image from being copied by other websites. Sometimes other websites directly link your image to their website thereby using your bandwidth which may lead to poor performance for your website and hence less revenue.

Several WordPress plugins to protect images from hotlinked or copied:

Here I have several Watermark image plugins for your WordPress website:

ByREV WP-PICShield WordPress plugin to stop hot linking:
ByRev Wp PicShield hotlink protection plugin
ByREV WP-PICShield is a WordPress plugin to protect against hotlinking images by search engines (Google, Bing etc.) and any other sites.

Some of the key features of this plugin are as follows:

  • Prevent Image hotlinking.
  • Redirect images click-link to: attachment template page or to single/gallery page.
  • Add Watermark to images.
  • Add QR code to images in Search engine.
  • Allow Social sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest.
  • Setting up for CDN.

Image Watermark WordPress plugin:

Image Watermark plugin allows you to automatically watermark images uploaded to the WordPress Media Library and bulk watermark previously uploaded images which is an easy to use plugin and one of the most downloaded Image Watermark WordPress plugin. This plugin comes in the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, German, Hungarian, Polish, Russian.

For me this is the one plugin that does everything.

Some of the key features of this plugin:

  • Bulk watermark option.
  • Watermark images already uploaded to Media Library.
  • You can choose the position of watermark image.
  • You can use custom watermark image.
  • You can see the Watermark image preview before publishing.
  • You can set watermark transparency / opacity.
  • You can protect your images from copying via drag and drop.
  • You can disable right mouse click on images.
  • You can disable image protection for logged-in users.

Easy Watermark WordPress plugin:

The Easy Watermark plugin is not at all less than the Image Watermark plugin in any way. This also watermarks image automatically when it is uploaded and supports watermark previously uploaded images too. IN addition to image watermark this also supports text watermark. This also has a feature to revert the watermark and return the image to its original state. This plugin is also a multilingual and comes in the following languages: Polish, French, Spanish, Persian and Russian.

Some of the key features of this plugin:

  • Image watermark can be a jpg, png or gif.
  • Supports fully translation.
  • Jpg files, gif files and text can have opacity set (from 0 to 100%).
  • Text watermark is created using ttf fonts.
  • All built-in image sizes can be watermarked (thumbnail, medium, large and fullsize) as well as all additional sizes registered by themes or plugins.
  • You can remove watermark by restoring the original image.

Transparent Image Watermark WordPress plugin:

This is also a good watermark plugin which supports automatic watermarking images as they are uploaded into your WordPress. But this plugin lacks bulk watermark for perloaded images. The user has to manually watermark previous images one-by-one.

Some of the key features of this plugin:

  • Fully Adjustable Image Watermark Position.
  • Fully Adjustable Text Watermark Position.
  • Highest Quality Watermarks using Image Re-sampling rather than Re-sizing.

Watermark WP image protect WordPress plugin:

This is a similar plugin to all other above plugins explained. Watermark WP image protect plugin automatically does the watermarking without users attention. This plugin also supports website-wide text watermarking in just seconds.

Some of the key features of this plugin:

  • Apply text watermarks to all of your site in seconds (new and existing uploads).
  • Set the text, font, color, size and background of the Watermark.
  • Supports disabling image hotlink.
  • Supports setting an existing image as watermark.
  • Easy to use user interface to manipulate, re-position or remove all Watermarks in seconds.

Watermark My Image WordPress plugin:
Although this plugin will not restrict copying images from your website but this will add watermark to your images which will at least add credibility to your images.
Some of the customizations for this plugin may not be user friendly. This plugin puts a watermark image underneath the picture and not on the picture itself.

If you don’t want the in-image watermark then I feel this is the perfect plugin for you. If you are a professional photographer and you just don’t want to spoil your image by watermarks but somehow you want to protect your name on the image, then yes this plugin will do the job for you.

NOTE: But one thing to remember: As the watermark sits at the end of the image, the image can be cropped to remove the watermark easily.

I will keep on adding more and more plugins if I find anything useful in this regard. Do place your thoughts on this and help me making this article better.
