Xiaomi CEO Mr. Lei Jun has officially announced on his Weibo account that sales of the company’s budget smartphones Redmi 2 and 2A have together exceeded 13 million units worldwide.
The Redmi 2 was launched earlier this year in January, and in around five months you can see the result is now impressive.
The low-priced duo together became the sixth Xiaomi model to have sales greater than 10 million phones. The other models to hit that benchmark include the Xiaomi Mi 2, Xiaomi Mi 3, Xiaomi Mi 4, Xiaomi Redmi 1S and the Xiaomi Redmi Note.
Xiaomi has been on a roll of late, having overtaken Samsung last year to take the mantle of the largest smartphone vendor in China. The company’s only competition nowadays seem to come from the rejuvenated Apple Inc, who has seen its sales rise exponentially over the last year, ever since the company came out with the large screen iPhones last year.
While Xiaomi has already diversified into smart wearables with the Mi Band and has just released smart air conditioners in partnership with Midea, smartphones expectedly remain bread and butter for the company. It will be hoping that the momentum it has gathered from a strong start in overseas markets will continue, amidst rising competition and diminishing pricing power at home.
